Cordyline, often referred to as Ti Plant, Good Luck Plant, or Hawaiian Ti, is a tropical ornamental plant popular for its vibrant, sword-shaped foliage that comes in dramatic shades of green, red, pink, burgundy, yellow, and even purple. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is native to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands.

Cordyline is widely cultivated both outdoors in tropical landscapes and indoors as a decorative plant. Through tissue culture, growers can mass-produce specific cultivars that display exceptional color patterns, leaf shapes, and uniform size, while also ensuring plants are healthy and pest-free.

🌈 Popular Tissue Cultured Cordyline Varieties

  • Cordyline fruticosa 'Red Sister' – Bright pink and red foliage with green tones.

  • Cordyline fruticosa 'Pink Diamond' – Pale pink edges with green centers.

  • Cordyline 'Kiwi' – Green leaves with cream and pink stripes.

  • Cordyline australis 'Red Star' – Deep burgundy, spiky leaves; more cold-tolerant.

🌿 Physical Features

  • Leaves: Long, lance-shaped or sword-like; color varies widely depending on variety.

  • Growth Habit: Upright, shrub-like; some species grow up to 3–10 feet in height outdoors.

  • Stems: Woody stems that may branch with age.

  • Flowers: Small, star-shaped blooms in panicles; ornamental value is mainly from the foliage.

🧫 Stage 1: Acclimatization (For tissue culture plantlets)
Rinse Roots: Clean off agar/gel gently with lukewarm water.

Potting Mix: Use a sterile, well-aerated mix such as coco peat + perlite or sphagnum moss.

Humidity: Keep under a humidity dome or clear plastic cover for 2–3 weeks.

Lighting: Bright, filtered light. Avoid full sun during early stages.

Ventilation: Slowly introduce airflow over time to reduce fungal issues.

Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, but avoid soggy conditions.

🌴 Stage 2: Ongoing Care (After acclimation)
Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight; some cultivars can handle partial sun. Outdoor types thrive in partial shade to full sun.

Watering: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Mist regularly if indoors.

Temperature: Best in 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Soil: Well-draining, rich in organic matter. A mix of peat, compost, and perlite is ideal.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during growing season.

Pruning: Remove yellow or dead leaves. Older plants can be cut back to encourage bushier growth.
